Our condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and people that were injured in Oakland Warehouse Fire on Saturday
Searchers have recovered at least 24 bodies from a fire-ravaged warehouse in Oakland that housed artist studios and was hosting a dance party when the deadly blaze broke out, officials said.

I have learned with grief about the horrible terrorist attack in Lahore, Pakistan that took 70 lives, majority of whom women and children, and injured over three hundred people on a children’s playground. As a practicing Muslim deeply influenced by tenets of my faith, I strongly condemn the brutal atrocities of the ISIS terrorist group. Their actions are a disgrace to the faith they proclaim and are crimes against humanity. Religion provides a foundation upon which to establish peace, human rights, freedoms and the rule of law. Any interpretations to the contrary, including the abuse of religion to fuel conflicts, are simply wrong and deceitful.

“I have learned with sadness about the attack on the United States Consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi which resulted in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, consulate personnel and several others. I strongly condemn this heinous attack which targeted public servants representing their country in Libya and thus were guests of Libyan government and people. The senseless kidnappings of hundreds of schoolgirls in Nigeria are deplorable and heartbreaking. I condemn these actions unequivocally and call upon the perpetrators of these acts to immediately release the schoolgirls. Education is a fundamental human right, which is guaranteed for women and men by Islam. Any interpretations to the contrary are fallacious and tend to serve either individual or political interests.

 Turkey mourns victims of tragic mine blast

Peace Islands Institute is deeply saddened by the mining disaster that occurred in Soma, Turkey on Tuesday. Unfortunately, mining explosion caused hundreds of death and left many others injured. Hundreds more were still believed to be trapped in the mine. The bodies are carried 2km from inside the mine by a stream of volunteers. This is one of the worst mining disasters not only in Turkey, but also in the world. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives due to the mine explosion. We pray for peace during the rescue operation to save the remaining trapped workers.

Monsignor Georges Marovitch, a former Vatican diplomatic official in Turkey, passed away on Thursday March 22, 2012 Marovitch was a prominent figure in Istanbul and was known for his great efforts to encourage intercultural and interreligious dialogue. He attended several meetings throughout the 1990s and 2000s to improve relations between different religious communities in Turkey.
