CLIFTON — Allwood Community Church hosted an Iftar dinner — the evening meal that breaks daily fasting during the Muslim season of Ramadan on June 24.

The event was sponsored by Peace Islands Institute, of Hasbrouck Heights, and the Turkish Cultural Center, of Clifton. More than 40 people of different faiths enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Rev. Nancy Hoerner, the pastor of Allwood Community Church, marked the three-year anniversary of her ordination that night.

Ramadan, which began on June 17 and will conclude on July 17, is celebrated in the ninth lunar month of the calendar used by Muslims, a 30-day period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and charitable outreach to those in need. Tozan said his organization invites non-Muslims to Iftar gatherings as a way to build bridges and cultivate friendships in a multicultural society.
