Annual Friendship Dinner and Award Ceremony

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This award is a call to increase my work in human rights, said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro receiving the Statesperson of the year award.

“Your goals,” said DeLauro, “ are my goals regarding human rights.” DeLauro received the award from Peace Islands for her work advocating for human rights and fight against discrimination.

Peace Islands Institute held its annual Friendship Dinner and Award Ceremony Wed. April 6, 2016 at the Omni New Haven Hotel. The theme of this year’s dinner was ‘Maintaining Harmony, Overcoming Xenophobia.’ Three awards were given at the event.

Reverend Nicolas Mumejian, managing editor of The Muslim World Journal, spoke as one of the guest speakers at the diner. Mumejian says small acts can have the ripple effect and help overcome a problem in today’s society – xenophobia.

The nights keynote speaker was Tanya Hughes, Executive Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. Hughes mentioned the importance of CHRO in our society today.

“Unity is the great need of the community today,” said Hughes.

Connecticut Senator Murphy was not able to make the dinner, but sent a letter to be read at the dinner.

The letter reads, “ Affecting hearts and minds at the local level is the most important thing we can do to move towards the goals of a more peaceful world.”

The Humanitarian Award was given to the Executive Director of Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, Chris George. He spent most of his professional life livening and working in the Middle East, directing a legislative strengthen project with the Palestinian Parliament.

“While spending a great amount of time at the refuge camps,” said George.” “I remember hospitality.”

Businessperson of the year Award was given to Lawrence Ford, CEO of Conscious Capital Wealth Management. Ford was mentioned as the “Shaman of Wall Street” by the Washington Post and has a long estimable career in finance and investments.

Ford says, “ It feels good to stand to stand in front of a crowd full of love.”
