Turkish Cultural Center, Brooklyn Amity School and Peace Islands Institute have united with Helping Hands Relief Foundation to contribute to ongoing relief efforts in Staten Island NY.
The borough of Staten Island has experienced severe damage from Hurricane Sandy and has received almost no aid in the first two days after the disaster. Hundreds of homes have collapsed and hundreds more have been impaired as a result of flooding, leaving many residents without power, heat or food. Thousands of young volunteers, in accordance with FEMA, Red Cross and the Salvation Army, have assembled to assist the victims and to help them recover their homes.
On Thursday, November 3, the members of Turkish Cultural Center Brooklyn, TCC Staten Island and students from Brooklyn Amity School have united with Helping Hands Relief Foundation to contribute to ongoing relief efforts. Noticing the lack of warm, nutritious food available to the victims and volunteers, contributors built their first tent in Staten Island from which they’ve distributed hot chicken soup to over [500] people. Since many areas are without electricity and power, they’ve also built a fire to provide workers and by passers, the opportunity to warm up. The hard work displayed by all the volunteers will continue for days as they attempt to improve the living conditions for the hurricane victims. It is also fortunate that with the cancellation of the NYC Marathon, many runners joined the relief efforts in Staten Island and offered their full support to the residents affected by the storm.
If you want to lend a hand to the victims in Staten Island or any other area in the East Coast, you may contact Helping Hands at www.hhrelief.org or 201-528-3181.
